One of the most provocative voices in current photographic theory, the researcher Ariella Azoulay questions the origins of photography in order to challenge the modern imperialist practices legitimized and perpetuated by it. Azoulay talks with historian and anthropologist Lilia Schwarcz, who researches the genesis and effects of violence, racism and authoritarianism in the constitution of Brazilian society.

Eustáquio Neves + Dora Longo Bahia + Tobias Zielony
Mediation: Suzana Velasco
Eustáquio Neves mobilizes his personal archive to construct social narratives on a global scale; Dora Longo Bahia appropriates photojournalistic images, changing their meanings; and German photographer Tobias Zielony depicts marginalized communities and takes their discourses to other circuits. In the work of these three artists, the paths the images take and the context in which they are viewed are as important as their own visualities.

Rosângela Rennó + Aleta Valente + Vincent Catala
Mediation: Ivana Bentes
Aleta Valente fires memes from the suburb of Rio de Janeiro; Rosângela Rennó uses other people’s photos to weave an alternate visual map of the city; Vincent Catala moved from France to the west zone of Rio in search of landscapes that were not made for export. From very different perspectives and languages, the three artists circulate other visions of a supersaturated urban space, creating new networks.

with Moisés Patrício [IMS Studio]
Walking is also an aesthetic practice. The purpose of the meeting is to offer the public routes around cultural facilities and a methodology for creating rituals and performances based on walks and on the experience and training with elements of Afro-Brazilian culture, especially Candomblé Ketu.

with Tobias Zielony [IMS Studio]
The workshop will focus on portrait photography in relation to questions of identity, self, gender and the body. This workshop will be a chance to share and develop thoughts about the links between the world of images and the physical world. Please bring a printed picture of yourself and that of a stranger as well as any digital camera that you are familiar with. Everybody is welcome.

The artist will comment on the creative process behind her 2018 ZUM / IMS Photography Grant-winning project, a book divided into two parts: the first, an experiment using literary techniques to tell a few stories inspired by her family; and the second, a photographic essay departing from themes treated in these narratives.
